Galax has earned recognition as the world capitol of Old Time Mountain Music. The Fiddlers Convention is held the second weekend in August each year.

Nearby Galax offers dining, antique shops, a farmer's market, a school of the arts as well as several festivals including the state BBQ championshop. Galax is also the trail head for the New River Trail and is home to the historic Rex Theater.

The Carroll County Courthouse is famous as the site of a shootout in 1912 involving Floyd and Sidna Allen, where 5 people were killed. Founded in 1842, Carroll County is named for Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The Sidna Allen House, located in Carroll County on US 52 (2 miles north of US 52 & Parkway) near Fancy Gap, was the home of Mr. Allen, who gained notoriety in the 1912 shootout at the Courthouse.

The World Famous Embers, a beach music band, is seen here performing at a festival in Hillsville Va. which is held every July.

14 miles to Mount Airy - Home of Andy Griffith - ("Mayberry, NC") and the world's largest open-faced granite quarry.

Hillsville is also home to the Southwest Virginia regional farmers market, which boasts wholesale and retail operations. Fresh locally grown produce and nursery items are available. It is located at Exit 14 off I-77, and is open from early spring through December. Another landmark of Carroll County and Hillsville is the annual coin-gun show and flea market held each Labor Day weekend. It attracts approximately 500,000 people from all around the world and is the largest gun show and flea market east of the Mississippi.
