The Carroll County Courthouse is famous as the site of a shootout in 1912 involving Floyd and Sidna Allen, where 5 people were killed. Founded in 1842, Carroll County is named for Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
The Sidna Allen House, located in Carroll County on US 52 (2 miles north of US 52 & Parkway) near Fancy Gap, was the home of Mr. Allen, who gained notoriety in the 1912 shootout at the Courthouse.

It is located at Exit 14 off I-77, and is open from early spring through December. Another landmark of Carroll County and Hillsville is the annual coin-gun show and flea market held each Labor Day weekend. It attracts approximately 500,000 people from all around the world and is the largest gun show and flea market east of the Mississippi.
